Today, let’s take a little storytime adventure and meet a few of these special creatures. These animals are an important part of Hawaiian culture and island life, and your keiki (kids) will love learning about them!

🦆 Nēnē (Nay-Nay) — The Hawaiian Goose

The nēnē is Hawai‘i’s state bird and the rarest goose in the world! It has soft gray feathers, a striped neck, and loves to eat grass and berries. You’ll often find nēnē walking on lava fields and grassy areas on the islands of Maui, Kaua‘i, and Hawai‘i Island.
Fun Fact: Unlike other geese, the nēnē doesn’t like to swim much!

🐢 Honu (Ho-NOO) — The Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle

The honu is one of the most loved animals in Hawai‘i. These gentle sea turtles are known for their beautiful green shells and peaceful nature. You might see them swimming in the ocean or resting on sunny beaches.
Fun Fact: In Hawaiian culture, the honu is a symbol of good luck, protection, and long life!

🦉 Pueo (Poo-eh-oh) — The Hawaiian Owl

The pueo is a special kind of owl that lives in Hawai‘i. Unlike most owls, pueo are active during the day! They have bright, watchful eyes and are known to be messengers in Hawaiian legends.
Fun Fact: Some families in Hawai‘i believe the pueo is a guardian spirit, called an ‘aumakua, that watches over them.
